The main learning objectives of this workshop are to:

• understand the purpose and foundations of qualitative research and debunk the ‘myths’ surrounding it
• receive insights into the different approaches for qualitative data analysis, including insights into the different approaches for theorising
• know when to use different analysis approaches to address various research aims and questions
• gain insights into the qualitative analysis process
• identify how to establish study rigour, credibility, and trustworthiness
• receive insights and guidelines on how to write up and review qualitative research

This workshop is designed for researchers at any stage of their careers who seek to understand how to approach and conduct their qualitative data analysis and how to write it up. The content will also be relevant to those who are involved in reviewing qualitative work.

Qualitative research is well suited for addressing ‘how’ questions, for understanding the world from the perspective of those studied, for testing underlying assumptions of existing theory or studying new research topics and phenomena, and for exploring and articulating processes. As qualitative research encompasses many ways to analyse data, conducting and/or reviewing empirical qualitative research requires an understanding of the different analysis approaches and their application as well as insights into how to establish and/or determine quality. 

This workshop will focus on analysing qualitative data as fitting to the study’s aims, on establishing study rigour, and on writing up qualitative work. The workshop will assist participants to understand inductive and/or deductive approaches for qualitative data analyses and it will cover the guidelines for employing grounded theory and for conducting a thematic analysis. The workshop will offer guidelines for establishing and/or determining rigour in qualitative research and for writing it up accordingly. Participants will be provided with helpful resources and references.

The workshop will mix presentations with group activities and exercises. Participants will receive the opportunity to consider and reflect on their own research.
