Research incubator: breaking bias in the digital age
Code: FD03
Presenters: Tanja Hentschel and Brooke Gazdag
Organisation represented: University of Amsterdam
The goal of this research incubator is to identify and design interventions that are of a digital nature or are particularly relevant in the digital context to reduce or break bias (such as gender, age, or racial bias). You will work in teams based on interest to design a research project to address a topic related to breaking bias in the digital age (think of topics such as creating inclusion in diverse teams via AI tools or minimizing gender stereotyping with an app). Ideally, this research incubator leads to a project you will actually pursue.
The main learning objectives of this workshop are to:
- work in teams to create a viable research project
- discuss bias interventions that are made possible by or are particularly suitable for the digital age
- develop and/or deepen knowledge on bias, stereotyping, diversity and inclusion in the digital age
Who is this workshop for?
Participation is open to all levels of experience who are studying or are interesting in studying bias, stereotyping, digitalisation or gamification - but only those who genuinely have the time and motivation to start and work on a new research project should consider attending. A follow-up (online) meeting will be organised for teams who pursued their project and have results to present.

There is no mandatory pre-work for the workshop although participants are advised to familiarise themselves with current research on interventions and digitalisation in the workplace. Potential participants who would like to discuss this or any other aspect of the workshop before booking a place are invited to contact Tanja Hentschel via her page on the University of Amsterdam website at http://www.uva.nl/en/profile/t.hentschel/
